September 2023, actor and novice filmmaker Reiky de Valk, only 23 years old, took his own life. He gained fame as an actor in popular Dutch tv-series such as SKAM, Follow de SOA, Hockeyvaders and Dertigers. This tragic loss has left family, friends and colleagues devastated. How could this happen? Reiky seemed to have it all: he was loved, handsome, talented and successful. He had countless friends
and spread love to everyone around him. But behind his radiant smile lay deep gloom, that made him feel he was not able to live his life any longer.
In our contemporary, individualistic and performance-oriented society, young people are exposed to immense pressures. They are confronted with a housing crisis, climate problems, political uncertainty and financial stress. Moreover, they experience the constant pressure to live a
seemingly perfect life on social media. Low mental health is an increasing problem in the Netherlands. The risk of high stress is even greater for young people in the creative sector, where performance pressure is even higher, opportunities are scarce and being cancelled a risk.
Goal
Our goal is to support young creative makers and artists in their creating process and provide them with a platform to do so. In various ways, practically and financially, but also mentally and emotionally, we want to provide the foundation and kickstart from which they can realize their projects. The Reiky4Life Foundation will serve as a community of elder and young creatives and professionals, focusing on fostering a place in the sun for the next generation of pioneers.
